Biography

A self-made man, Akshay was one of the first actors who did all his action scenes himself. Trained in Taekwondo and martial arts, he is a health freak and has delivered hits like Mohra and the Khiladi series. In recent times, he has shot to fame with blockbusters like Rowdy Rathore, Housefull and Oh My God. Born to military officer, Om Bhatia and his wife Aruna Bhatia, as Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, Akshay Kumar spent his initial days in Amritsar. He also spent some time in Delhi, before moving to Mumbai where he finished school from Don Bosco School. He enrolled in the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for further studies. After winning a black belt in Taekwondo, he moved to Bangkok to learn martial arts, where he worked as a cook and waiter to make ends meet. When he moved back to Bombay, he started conducting classes on martial arts. After one of his students recommended him, he landed a few modelling assignments. His debut was with the film Saugandh (1991) with Raakhee and Shantipriya. After another failed attempt with Dancer (1991), his final breakthrough came with the thriller Khiladi (1992). Fate smiled on him again in the year 1994, when two of his films - Main Khiladi Tu Anari and Mohra became the most successful films of the year. His role in Yeh Dillagi (1994) also earned him a nomination for the Filmfare and Stardust Best actor Award. He acted in Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995) and Khiladiyon ka Khiladi (1996) which established him as one of the most accomplished actors. The following year he won the Filmfare best supporting actor award for Dil toh Pagal Hai. The 1999 films Sangharsh and Jaanwar won him much critical appreciation. His performance in Hera Pheri (2000) is considered one of the best in the film industry. He also won a Filmfare for the best villain in the 2001 thriller Ajnabee. He is most lauded for his roles in Aitraaz (2004), Waqt (2005), Namastey London (2007), Bhool Bhulaiya (2007), Singh is King (2008), Patiala House (2011), OMG-Oh My God!(2012) and Special 26 (2013). He also has two Filmfare awards under his belt for his comic roles in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2005) and Garam Masala (2006). Akshay Kumar was honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Award in 2004 and the Padma Shri in 2009. In more recent times, he has soared into the league of superstars with films like Rowdy Rathore (2012), Boss (2013), Gabbar is Back (2015) and Brothers (2015). Apart from acting, he has also stepped into production with his two production houses Hari Om Entertainment and Grazing Goat Pictures. Kumar also takes a keen interest in sports and owns the team Khalsa Warriors in the World Kabaddi League. His will seen next in Singh is Bling (October, 2015), Airlift (2016), Housefull 3 (2016), Rustom (2016) and Namaste England (2016). He married the Hindi film actress Twinkle Khanna, daughter of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia in 2001. The couple is blessed with a son Aarav and daughter Nitara.
