The Padma Shri recipient, is often hailed as the most beautiful woman, and has represented India across various platforms. The former Miss World has many feathers in her cap, among which are critically acclaimed films like Raincoat and Guru. Aishwarya was born to Krishnaraj, a marine biologist, and his homemaker wife, Brindya in Mangalore. Soon after, the family moved to Mumbai, where she enrolled at the Arya Vidya Mandir High School for her schooling. Rai completed her intermediate schooling at Jai Hind College before joining the DG Ruparel College in Matunga. She has an elder brother called Aditya Rai, who is an engineer in the Merchant Navy. Nursing an ambition to become an architect, she joined Raheja College of Arts, but quit soon after to pursue modelling. As a teen, she had trained in classical dance and singing for five years. She was also featured in Vogue’s American Edition after winning a supermodel contest by Ford. Her first brush with acting happened when she was in the ninth grade and appeared in a commercial for Camlin pencils. In 1993, she became a famous face across the nation, when she appeared alongside Aamir Khan, in a Coca-Cola commercial. The subsequent year, she participated in the Miss India pageant, where she secured the second position, thus representing India at the Miss World Pageant. She went on to win the title and was also awarded the Miss Photogenic title along with being crowned as the Miss World Continental Queen of Beauty - Asia and Oceania. Aishwarya stepped into films with Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Iruvar in 1997. The film was critically acclaimed and she made her Bollywood debut in the same year with Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. However, her launch in Bollywood was unsuccessful. The next year, she was praised for the Tamil film Jeans. In 1999, she starred in Rishi Kapoor’s directorial debut, Aa Ab Laut Chalein, which turned out to be a commercial failure. The high point of her career was when she starred in Sanjay Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in the year 1999. The commercially successful film also earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She then went on to win another Filmfare for Best Actress for her 2002 film Devdas. In the meanwhile, she worked on two commercially successful films - Taal (1999) and Josh (2000). She also starred in Mohabbatein (2000), which earned her a Filmfare nomination for the best supporting actress. Her Bengali film, Rituparno Ghosh’s Chokher Bali (2003) won her oodles of critical acclaim and the Anandalok Award for Best Actress. She was then cast in Rituparno’s Raincoat (2004), opposite Ajay Devgan. The National Award winning film was a major success and was highly praised by critics. In the same year, she appeared in Gurinder Chadha's crossover film, Bride & Prejudice. Since then, she has appeared in many international projects like The Mistress of Spices (2005), The Last Legion (2007), Provoked (2007) and The Pink Panther 2 (2009). She has also starred in Dhoom 2 (2006), which was a blockbuster and earned her a Filmfare nomination for best actress. She earned the same nomination for her role in the critically acclaimed Guru (2007) and the epic drama Jodhaa Akbar (2008). In 2010, she starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, Guzaarish, which impressed both critics and audiences. Her upcoming films include Sanjay Gupta’s Jazbaa (2015), Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) and two more films - Sarabjit Singh’s biopic and Suspect X - the dates of which are yet to be announced. She has received countless awards for being India’s Face as the Global Icon including the The Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a recognition from the Government of France for her significant contribution to the arts. In 2003, she was voted as the most attractive woman in a poll conducted by UK’s Hello! Magazine. The following year, she got her own wax statue at the prestigious Madame Tussaud’s wax museum. Mattel has also released a limited edition of dolls modelled after the actress. Rai has also appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show twice and once on the Late Show with David Letterman. She has also walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. She has performed at concerts to raise money for victims of natural calamities and is the brand ambassador of The Eye Bank Association. She is a supporter of PETA and the GoodWill ambassador of Smile Train. Aishwarya is a proud recipient of the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour conferred by the Government of India. In Netherlands, a tulip was named after her due to her unparalleled beauty. Among endorsements, she has brands like Titan, Lux, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Nakshatra Diamond Jewellery, Kalyan Jewellers, L’Oreal and Palmolive to her credit. Rai also serves as the global brand ambassador of L'Oreal. In 2007, she married actor Abhishek Bachchan, son of superstar Amitabh Bachchan and yesteryear’s leading actress Jaya Bachchan. The couple was blessed with a baby girl, Aaradhya in 2011.
