Biography

Adil Hussain is an Indian stage, television and film actor, who works in mainstream Hindi cinema as well as art house cinema. His most notable roles include those in English Vinglish, Life of Pi and Lootera among others. Adil Hussain was born and brought up in Goalpara, Assam. His father was a teacher. He left home at the age of 18 to study philosophy at B. Borooah College, Guwahati, where he started acting in college plays and performing as a stand-up comedian. After a six year stint, he moved to Delhi, where he studied at National School of Drama (1990-1993). He also studied at the Drama Studio London on a Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship. After his return to India in 1994, he joined with the mobile 'Hengul Theater' in Assam, where he worked for three years, before moving to Delhi. Adil first received critical acclaim for Othello: A Play in Black and White (1999), which was awarded the Edinburgh Fringe First, and later Goodbye Desdemona also directed by Roysten Abel. He made his debut in films with the Bengali film Iti Srikanta (2004), where he played the lead role. On television, he appeared in the lead role, in the detective series Jasoos Vijay (2002–2003). After a small role in Kaminey (2007), it was his role in Ishqiya (2010) that got him attention in Bollywood. He later went on to star in meaty roles that established his acting prowess. Some of his notable performances were in the Saif-Kareena starrer, Agent Vinod (2012), Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012), the Sridevi starrer English Vinglish (2012), Ang Lee’s Life of Pi (2012), the Ranveer-Sonakshi starrer Lootera (2013) and Main Aur Charles (2015). His upcoming ventures include Umrika (2015), Angry Indian Goddesses (2015), Main Aur Charles (2015), Parched (2015) and Tigers (2015). He is married and has a son and resides in Delhi.
