A R Rahman is one of the most influential music composers in the world. For his work as a composer, singer-songwriter, music producer, and musician in a notable two-decade career, Rahman has won two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe award, four National Film Awards, and fifteen Filmfare Awards among innumerable other honors. Rahman's body of work for film and stage has given him the nickname of "the Mozart of Madras," and Tamil commentators and fans call him Isai Puyal (the Musical Storm). The Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan in 2000 and 2010 respectively. Career - A R Rahman's film career began in 1992 when he started Panchathan Record Inn, a recording and mixing studio in his backyard. After initially scoring for documentaries and advertisements, he was approached by filmmaker Mani Ratnam to compose the score and soundtrack for his Tamil film, Roja (1992). The wild success of the romantic soundtrack helped Rahman rise to international fame. Its soundtrack was even listed in the Ten Best Soundtracks of all time by TIME Magazine. Thence started an illustrious career. Rahman was mainly associated with South Indian films before his expansion to Bollywood and international films. His Bombay (1995) soundtrack is another wildly popular composition. Rangeela (1995) was the first film he composed music for in Bollywood. Since then, he has produced music for hit films like Dil Se.. (1998), Taal (1999), Lagaan (2001), Saathiya (2002), Swades (2004), Rang De Basanti (2006), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), Rockstar (2011), and most recently Raanjhana (2013) and Highway (2014). His works are noted for integrating Eastern classical music with electronic music, world music, and traditional orchestral arrangements. He has been acclaimed for redefining contemporary Indian film music and contributing to the success of several films. He has also composed for hit international projects, the most popular and award winning being Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and 127 Hours (2010), the former of which earned him the record-breaking two Oscars. He is one of the world's all-time best-selling recording artists, and is often listed by international magazines as one of the greatest music producers ever. Rahman is also a notable humanitarian and philanthropist, donating a substantial part of his earnings to charity. Personal Life - A R Rahman was born in Tamil Nadu. He is married to SairaBanu, and has three children, two of whom are singers.
